dc.description.notes | General Overview: In 2008, Older Women’s Network NSW was funded to run a Prevention of Violence Against Older Women project, which resulted in the development of a Strategy targeting this issue. This Topic Paper from the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse explores the issues of violence facing older women, discusses responses to address this kind of violence and details the components of the Strategy.<br/ ><br/ >A lack of collaboration between the domestic violence sector and the aged-care sector has resulted in limited support for older women experiencing domestic violence. To address this, the paper recommends: greater collaboration; the inclusion of aged care services in government strategies addressing violence against women; the establishment of interagency protocols which prioritise building collaborative networks; and the development of training on violence against older women across the sector. More specifically, the paper recommends that health professionals, especially general practitioners play a key role in recognising, assessing and responding to violence against older women.<br/ ><br/ >The author recommends that to adequately address violence against older women, this violence must be legislated and legal professionals must be given training. Finally, the author recommends that community education and collaboration against violence against older women is undertaken. | en |
