dc.description.notesOverview: This paper from the United States reports on the result of a review of published scientific evidence concerning the effectiveness of universal school-based programs to prevent violent and aggressive behaviour.<br/ ><br/ >Methodology: The review included only studies of school based programs which assessed violent outcomes or any of five proxies for violent outcomes, and where the reduction of violent or aggressive behaviour was an objective of the program, other criteria are outlined in the report. Proxies for violent outcomes are identified as:<br/ ><br/ >Of the studies considered, 53 met the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis was carried out to evaluate and compare the results across all school levels and different populations. The process of review and the statistical analysis are presented in detail.<br/ ><br/ >Conclusion: The report concludes that school-based programs for the prevention of violence are effective for all school levels and that different intervention strategies are effective. Programs also have other effects, including reducing truancy and improving school achievement. The paper concludes by identifying further research issues and discussing the use of the recommendation in the United Statesen
