The study found that Aboriginal women in prison have low educational attainment and high levels of unemployment. Most are single mothers and many have responsibilities for caring for other family members. Most had previous convictions and most were on drugs at the time of their last offence. Most had been sexually assaulted as children and had experienced domestic violence as adults. Recommendations are made regarding alternatives to prison, programs in prison, post-release programs and crime prevention. | en |
