Notes:  This topic paper examines the available data about male victims of domestic violence. It finds little statistical data recording men as victims either in Australia or overseas. It discusses what is known about men’s experiences of domestic violence and the implications for service providers. Research indicates very different experiences of victimisation reported by men (heterosexual or gay) and women within the context of domestic violence, and emphasises the need to understand the context of abuse and the dynamics of power and control in such relationships. It explains that direct comparisons between men’s and women’s violence is not useful because the causes and consequences of violence are different. It concludes that men’s and women’s experiences of violence should not be placed in competition with each other and argues that effective responses need to be based on a better understanding of the complexities of each form of victimisation.
