Focuses on the greater involvement of police in family and domestic violence matters and in applying for and issuing Violence Restraining Orders. Under certain conditions of the legislation, police are obliged to apply for a VRO, and it is now possible for police and child welfare officers to apply for a VRO to protect a child from exposure to domestic violence. Additionally, police may now issue on-the-spot temporary restraining orders, for 24 hours when without the victim’s consent and 72 hours when with consent. Statistics for police orders for December 2004 are presented, as well as a graph of the number of family and domestic violence incidents from 2000 to 2004. | en |
