Drawing on presentations from Non-consensual Sexual Experiences of Young People in Developing Countries: A Consultative Meeting:held in New Delhi, India from 22-25 September 2003, this brief examines the limited research into the experiences of young women in developing countries who have suffered sexual coercion. While acknowledging that cross-sectional studies are limited in the conclusions that may be drawn, evidence obtained from a number of small-scale such studies in Latin America, Africa and South Asia is used to propose an association between sexual violence experienced at an early age and a number of adverse physical and mental health and social outcomes. It is concluded that vulnerability to non-consensual sex is greater among young women who have experienced childhood or early adolescent sexual abuse and that there is an increased occurrence of subsequent unsafe consensual sex characterised by non-use of condoms, multiple sexual partners, unintended pregnancy and infection. Recommendations for action are given.en
