BIG hART is a non-profit incorporated organisation that has been operating since 1992 in Tasmania, NSW, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Working mainly in rural, regional and isolated areas, with people experiencing marginalisation, BIG hART mentors the gifts and stories of people on the fringes, using professional arts and Community Cultural Development workers, to create artwork, film, theatre and radio that mainstreams these stories and builds empathy in the broader community. Book 1 of their practical teaching and mentor manuals serves to introduce the organisation, its ethos and the philosophical framework underpinning its projects. Briefly describes the contents of the other six books which make up the manual and gives an overview of the BIG hART model, including therapy, participation, structural creativity, art and community.
