Statistics on child deaths arising from abuse and neglect are presented and the short-, medium- and long-term consequences of abuse as highlighted in the literature are identified. The various approaches to estimating the cost of child abuse and neglect are considered and a national estimate is presented. ‘Costs’ are defined to include the short- and long-term ‘human’ costs to those abused, long-term social costs, costs of public intervention and the costs of community contributions. | en |
