| dc.description.notes | Presents the aims, methodology and findings of a research project undertaken by the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse in partnership with the University of NSW Centre for Gender-Related Violence. The first of its kind in NSW, the study examines the factors enabling and/or preventing women and children from remaining in, and having the perpetrator of domestic violence removed from, the family home. Participant interviews suggested women most often left home due to an absence of alternative choices and that there is a need for systemic changes to services and government agencies so that having a violent partner removed might become a viable option for victims and their families. Based on an analysis of the research findings, the author outlines a framework for addressing this challenge, comprising four key components: removal of the violent partner from the home; keeping the violent partner out of the home; addressing immediate- and long-term safety issues and providing longer-term support to women and children to prevent future violence. A series of recommendations for future research, evaluation and reform to existing services and practice is included. | en |
