This manual is a product of the “Working With Children” project and is designed as a guide for service providers interested in improving assistance to children and young people who experience domestic violence. Its first section provides practice standards for working with children and young people. The first Standard refers to the quality of the service, ongoing assessment, accountability and interagency collaboration. Standard Two addresses philosophy and values, which include gender issues, a child centre focus and client empowerment. Safety needs and legal and ethical issues are discussed in Standard Three. Standard Four examines accessibility, the physical environment and the general organisation. Cultural appropriateness is dealt with in the Fifth Standard. Standard Six focuses on the staff’s skills, training and support. Subsequent sections provide information on working with children, models of intervention, good practice examples and quality tools. Examples of key forms appear at the end including a lengthy Standards Assessment Tool.
