The aim is to raise awareness of ‘red flags’ for domestic violence, some resources, and basic safety planning principles. Unit 1 looks at definitions and prevalence of domestic violence, with the objectives to: understand what constitutes an abusive intimate relationship; identify ‘red flags’ for domestic violence; be aware of different forms of abuse; know the incidence of domestic violence, and limitations of research on domestic violence. Unit 2 focuses on interviewing and screening, and includes the objectives to: develop skills with interviewing survivors of domestic violence; increase awareness of indicators of domestic violence; and develop skills at identifying strengths within the survivor and in the survivor’s environment. Legal aspects are given in Unit 3, with the objectives to understand: the circumstances in which a social worker is required by law to report an incident of violence and how to do so to best support the survivor of domestic violence; about a restraining order; the role of Victim Witness Advocates and the criminal justice system in the Massachusetts’ context; and the special circumstances for an immigrant survivor of domestic violence in Massachusetts. This is followed by risk assessment and providing options for safety in Unit 4, with the objectives of learning: how to assess risk in a domestic violence situation; and how to assist a survivor in making a safety plan. Unit 5 contains resources and referrals specific to Massachusetts. Children and domestic violence are covered in Unit 6, while Unit 7 deals with working with perpetrators. | en |
