The mindset of intimate partner sexual violence perpetrators: Motivations and myths

Abstract

This chapter examines the motivations of intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) perpetrators and the myths they use to justify their actions and evade accountability. It explores the psychological and social factors that contribute to the mindset of men who perpetrate sexual violence, aiming to challenge victim-blaming narratives and enhance understanding to inform prevention efforts. The chapter also confronts pervasive myths about the identity of "real" rapists, encouraging a broader and more accurate understanding of sexual violence within intimate partner relationships.
