Understanding the perspectives and experiences of male perpetrators of sexual violence against women: A scoping review and thematic synthesis

Abstract

This scoping review examines peer-reviewed qualitative research on the perspectives of adult male perpetrators of sexual violence against women. It synthesises findings from 14 articles published over the past 40 years, including studies on convicted sex offenders, anonymous online forum users, and university students. Four major themes emerged, highlighting perpetrators’ tendencies to deflect blame onto victims, cite external mitigating factors, and justify actions as uncontrollable urges, alongside expressions of remorse or acceptance of responsibility in some cases. The study underscores the urgent need for targeted prevention and rehabilitation programs based on a deeper understanding of perpetrators' perspectives.
