This article explores the experiences of hair and beauty salon workers in Australia during the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Based on a survey of 92 participants, the study examines the increased emotional labour demanded of salon workers amidst heightened anxiety and stress. Salon workers reported diverse and complex client disclosures, including family and gender-based violence, mental health challenges, and experiences of social oppression. These roles were intensified as many workers faced their vulnerabilities, including financial, physical, and emotional stress, while continuing to provide care in close-contact environments. The findings highlight the intersection of emotional labour, health and safety concerns, and the economic and psychological impacts of violence on workers, emphasising the need for better support systems for this workforce during crises.en_US
