Notes:  Overview: This book chapter discusses responses to violence by men which integrate children’s experience of violence by their fathers and stepfathers. A Norwegian research and treatment centre, “Alternative to Violence” (ATV) is examined as an example of such a response.

Discussion: The chapter discusses evidence of gender differentiation between boys and girls in how they are affected by, and respond to domestic violence. The paper then goes on to describe and discuss in detail ATV and the various programs and treatment models it offers. The main thrust of ATV is treatment for men, although well-being and security of the women and children are a primary concern. The chapter concludes that there is a need for further evidence of the effectiveness of treatment programs for men as fathers and for closer collaboration between men’s intervention programs, child protection services and other key agencies.
