Notes:  General overview: This booklet examines the specific nature of domestic violence in Aboriginal communities, how it relates to cultural gender roles, comparisons with non-Aboriginal communities and the diversity of experience between different Aboriginal communities. It also outlines the response of services to the problem – both how they currently operate and the needs of Aboriginal communities for more culturally appropriate responses.

Objective: The booklet points out that there are many differences between Aboriginal communities which make generalisations unsound. It also points out that although Aboriginal communities are statistically far more likely to experience these problems, the way domestic violence is experienced in Aboriginal communities is very similar to the experiences of non-Aboriginal communities.
