Notes:  General Overview: This chapter of the report on Statistics of the Magistrates and Children’s Courts of Victoria, Intervention Order Statistics 1998/99 – 2002/03, provides statistics relevant to complaints for intervention orders relating to stalking. Between 1998 and 2003 there was a 32% increase in the number complaints (+1,376) for an intervention order of stalking and the number of directly aggrieved people making a complaint rose by 41.1%.

Discussion:The chapter looks at who made complaints for orders relating to stalking. Of the 5,622 complaints made in the time period, the majority were made by the aggrieved person (93%), followed by police (4%).

The report examines the duration of orders; most were up to one year. It looks at restrictions placed on perpetrators, which typically include prohibiting behaviours such as approaching, telephoning or contacting the aggrieved party or being within a specific distance of where that person lives or works. The report examines the gender of complainants, where 41% were male compared to 59% female complainants.

There have been changes in the proportions of aggrieved persons of different ages. The number of aggrieved persons in the younger age groups increased in the time period (i.e. those aged less than 20 years), as did the number of people in the older age group (40 years and older). The bulk of defendants were between 20 to 49 years, although the proportion of defendants aged 20 to 29 years decreased over the time period. The proportion of defendants aged over 40 years has increased over the time period.
