Explores the issues of gay and bisexual men who have experienced intimate partner violence and who are also HIV-positive or in a relationship with someone who is HIV-positive. Argues that HIV infection does not cause domestic violence any more than any other outside agent like alcohol, drugs, job stress or an abusive childhood, and that providers must stress to clients that violence is an inappropriate coping strategy. Also looks at HIV as a tool of manipulation within a relationship and as a factor in the decision of a battered man to leave a violent relationship. Suggests that gay men are at risk from violent HIV-positive partners who may deliberately infect a partner to keep him from leaving or who may simply be too uncaring to use condoms or who will manipulate authorities using the tactic that a man with AIDS is incapable of perpetrating domestic violence. Discusses the difficulties in leaving a relationship for both HIV-negative and -positive men, and concludes that there is a very great need for research on gay male battering.
