Notes:	Examines popular cultural perceptions of lesbians and lesbianism in the United States and the role this has played in silencing women who have experienced same-sex violence and/or abuse. Contradictory portrayals of lesbians in Hollywood films and the media are used to illustrate the pervasive nature of stereotypical images and the impact this has had on lesbian victims of violence willingness to disclose the abuse. Some of the inadequacies of traditional feminist analysis of lesbian violence are discussed and the implications this has had for research and theory are highlighted. The use of deconstructive and discourse analysis techniques is advocated as one way of exposing and challenging current dichotomies. Some of these techniques were applied in the context of the Winnepeg, Manitoba CLOSE project, a research project involving a needs assessment and the development of a three-day training programme for shelter and second-stage housing workers aimed at addressing the subtle forms of heterosexism within shelters and the consequent invisibility of lesbian experience.
