Notes:  This report provides an overview of health issues faced by women living in the Northern Territory. In relation to domestic and family violence, statistics and Government strategies are examined. The prevalence of this type of violence is significant: police responded to 434 domestic violence calls in January 2000. An average of six domestic violence calls per night was made to the greater Darwin area police between 1996 and 1997. Aboriginal women are particularly affected by this problem. Family violence injuries accounted the greatest cause of hospital admissions among Aboriginal women. Eighty per cent of the 749 women who accessed shelters to escape domestic or family violence in 1997-98 were indigenous. The Northern Territory Government released a general strategy to prevent and address domestic violence in 1994, and a specific family violence plan for Aboriginal people in 1995.
