| Notes: | Provides an overview of the training offered to police officers and recruits, both within the police departments and by external academic and community agencies across Australia. Part One examines training courses offered within the various State police departments, drawing a distinction between basic, promotional/specialist and in-service training. Argues that while most States and Territories currently dedicate sufficient recruit training time to sessions on family violence, less emphasis is placed on sexual assault issues and fewer senior management programmes incorporate training in either area. A lack of recognition of the criminality of domestic violence and the need for more culturally sensitive responses are also identified as key concerns. Part Two examines the external police training courses available across jurisdictions, again identifying a scarcity of programmes providing an in-depth analysis of relevant gender and power issues. A summary of gaps in current training and a series of recommendations are then presented. |
