Utilising the findings of a research project conducted in various geographical regions of Canada, this book is an attempt to acknowledge the specificity of violence in lesbian relationships and explore how this ‘new category’ is being defined, explained and addressed. An overview of available research on lesbian violence and the debate surrounding its emergence as a field of feminist research is provided and the methodology and emancipatory approach adopted by the author outlined. The text goes on to explore both the material and discursive aspects of participants’ narratives, highlighting the inadequacies of dominant gender-based theories of violence in responding to the experiences of lesbian, queer and transgender populations. The need for more inclusive discourses and institutional responses that challenge traditional dichotomies is emphasised and some examples of innovative practice in this area are presented.
