Discussion: The editor notes that the purpose of the encyclopedia is to present a comprehensive, up to date, easy to read compilation of a wide variety of domestic violence subjects. The subjects are divided into seven categories: victims, theoretical perspectives and correlates, cross-cultural and religious perspectives, understudied areas, child abuse and elder abuse, and special topics. Each entry is about three pages long and includes a list of references.

The majority of the contributors are academics at US universities and most of the entries focus on US research. There is some examination of domestic violence in Africa, China, Pakistan, Latin America, Greece, Venezuela, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago. There is also consideration of the role of international and European law in addressing domestic violence
