Notes:  Reports the design and results of a study which compared the effects of two Scottish court-mandated programmes for perpetrators of domestic violence with traditional forms of criminal justice dispositions such as fines, probation, imprisonment. Data were collected via in-depth interviews and standardised instruments at intake, and postal questionnaire 3 and 12 months later. The authors argue that the research design should “fit” the social problem being studied and describe the nature of domestic violence and the research design used to achieve this “fit”. The methodology included the inclusion of both men and women partners as respondents and the development of four new tools to study ‘violence’, ‘injuries’, ‘controlling behaviour’ and ‘quality of life’ for men and women. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected and the book includes the voices of men talking about their violence and controlling behaviour and about the process of change. The study found no difference between the two groups on the outcome measure of criminal recidivism. In contrast to the recidivism data, the data from the women revealed greater success at reducing their violent and controlling behaviour than for the comparison group. The authors argue for mandated programmes, as the two programmes studied suffered much lower rates of attrition than have been reported in other studies.
