Title: Assessing woman battering in mental health services
Authors: Gondolf, Edward W
Keywords: Mental health
Categories: People with mental health and/or drug and alcohol issues
Year: 1998
Publisher: Sage Publications
Notes:  Recognises the high incidence of battered women who appear in mental health settings in the US and highlights the difficulties for battered women who often receive inappropriate responses from some mental health professionals. Stresses the need to bridge the gap between women’s advocates and mental health professionals who are often operating from different perspectives. Suggests this may be achieved by identifying the common ground existing between perspectives and building upon their complementary contributions. The book is divided into three parts including: identifying the issues that underlie inappropriate assessment; presentation of specific assessment tools, safety plans and working with women’s strengths; and how to work with women in a way that recognises the diversity of their personal and contextual experiences. Advocates development of a model that identifies abuse, its dynamics and severity, that accounts for abuse within mental health diagnosis and treatment, and specifically takes steps to respond in ways that increase women’s safety, such as the development of holistic safety plans and attention to assessing lethality.
