Notes:	Explores development of the notion “woman defined advocacy” which is based on building a partnership between the advocate and the woman to define the advocacy and help she needs as well as strengthening her safety plan. Promotes practice that integrates the advocate’s knowledge and resources into the woman’s framework, and ultimately values her thoughts, feelings, opinions and dreams and recognises that she is the decision maker. Describes a pragmatic approach that recognises the impact of the abusive partner’s violence and abuse, the need to acknowledge the limitations and realities of women’s lives, and how this may compromise the choices available to battered women. The book is divided into 3 parts: understanding a woman’s perspective, including her risk analysis and safety plan; building partnerships with battered women; and systems advocacy. An essential component of woman-defined advocacy includes steps taken to enhance systemic responses to women experiencing domestic violence, especially when the system does not respond or responds in an inadequate way. Emphasises that woman defined advocacy is not blind, passive acceptance of a woman’s choices or analyses, but rather an approach that integrates the advocate’s and the woman’s knowledge. They stress that an assessment of life threatening risks and risks to children must be conducted in any review of a woman’s safety plans. At times this may involve a delicate balance between adding to and enhancing a woman’s safety plans versus trying to completely change her judgments.
