Notes:  Based on the findings of an extensive UK study aimed at exploring children's experiences of domestic violence and their thoughts on how we might best respond to their needs, this book argues for an approach to research with children that moves beyond viewing children as merely passive victims. An approach that simultaneously addresses the ethical issues which direct research with children raises, and the need for children to be involved in the development of strategies for dealing with domestic violence is outlined. The quantitative phase of the research project involved a survey of the general population of children and young people aimed at identifying key themes in their attitudes towards violence in domestic and romantic relationships. The qualitative phase involved in-depth interviews with children and abused parents to identify the range of coping strategies utilised and the dynamics of relationships between children, the abused and the abuser. A series of recommendations, based on the findings of the study are also included.
