Keywords: Advocacy;Human rights;Policy;Community development
Year: 2001

Notes:  Beginning from an international human rights and development perspective based on the philosophy of the UK NGO, Oxfam, this book presents an argument in favour of the involvement of global development organisations in combating violence against women in its various forms. In the first part of the book, definitions, concepts and evidence concerning violence against women are explored and some of the human rights and development responses that have been adopted are examined. The role of key social institutions, such as the family and the State, in perpetuating and/or condoning violence against women is assessed and other contributing factors, including armed conflict and poverty, are discussed. The second part of the book focuses on practical strategies and responses to violence against women at both a grassroots and policy level. The role of development organisations in challenging State responses and raising public awareness is highlighted, and implications for planning and advocating social change are outlined.
