This manual is designed to assist General Practitioners in identifying and dealing with adult survivors of child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence and elder abuse. The first section provides figures of what is happening in general practice and casualty settings, and some of the symptoms of abused women. Then, the myths and facts about women and violence are discussed. The following sections separately outline the prevalence, impact, needs and characteristics of adult survivors of child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence and elder abuse. Case studies that describe the diagnosis, management and outcome are included. The next section presents the characteristics of the perpetrators. Finally, doctors' options and obligations are developed.
