Notes: | This collection of essays addresses a range of issues associated with the legal and social status of refugees and asylum seekers in Australia, with particular emphasis on the mental health implications of escaping persecution, detention, temporary residency and integration into the community following the grant of a permanent visa. The introductory chapter presents an overview of Australia's humanitarian programme and the procedures governing asylum seekers. The essays in Part 1 discuss the vulnerability of particular groups of asylum seekers, such as children and young people in detention, East Timorese women and temporary visa holders. Part 2 focuses on specific mental health issues which arise in the context of resettlement, such as depression and post traumatic stress disorder, and the various coping strategies and models for intervention that might be utilised. |
