Notes:  Attempts to draw together some of the specific issues facing lesbians involved in, or escaping, abusive relationships, by first exploring the parameters of what is meant by abuse, violence and domestic violence in the lesbian community and summarising the available data on its incidence. The intersectional nature of disadvantage experienced by lesbians who are Aboriginal, come from non-English speaking backgrounds, are disabled or who live in rural areas is discussed and particular challenges identified. The absence of any substantive level of policy and research dealing specifically with these issues is highlighted as is the difficulties this raises for the provision of legal and welfare services. Various types of services which are available specifically for lesbians who are victims of abuse are outlined and recommendations for further development of theoretical, practical and structural resources are made.
