Notes:  Sidey describes Creating New Choices, a violence prevention project developed in 1994 by Berry Street, Victoria. The model used to deliver the project relies on a critical examination of the whole school environment to ensure that students, teachers, school staff, parents and the community are incorporated into the prevention project plan. An intensive long-term relationship is maintained between the project worker and two or three schools at any one time. A community development approach is taken to address issues relating to violence as they impact on young people and the school community. Sidey describes the socio-political context in which the programme has been developed and refined. The rationale, principles and research underpinning the programme are articulated with planning, programme development and evaluation strategies identified. Difficulties or “risk factors” in implementing the programme are discussed. The results of an external evaluation of the programme is briefly reviewed and successful outcomes are identified including the strength of school and community agency relationships, the enhancement of relations within the school community and the liberation of creating a culture focused on non-violence. Sidey concludes that the whole school approach to violence prevention is effective and has been achieved with minimal funding through the formation of strategic partnerships both within and outside the immediate school community. The appendix includes a selection of case study initiatives developed as a result of Creating New Choices.
