Title: Preventing domestic violence death : is sexual assault a risk factor?
Authors: Braaf, R
Year: 2011
Publisher: Australian Domestic & Family Violence Clearinghouse, UNSW
Notes:  An unacceptable number of domestic violence related deaths take place each year in Australia. Reducing their number depends on recognising and managing lethal risk factors. This paper aims to draw attention to sexual abuse in intimate relationships as a risk factor for lethality. The author seeks to raise awareness of this issue amongst workers and professionals in order to encourage greater responsiveness to victim needs and the dangers posed by perpetrators. Associations between sexual violence by male intimate partners and homicide by perpetrators and victims of abuse are examined, as well as victim suicide. Included is an examination of the way in which sexually violent behaviour is used in relationships. Some of the barriers to effective responses to this form of abuse and risk are examined. Suggestions are made regarding effective response by service providers and criminal justice agencies and directions for further research are proposed, with the aim of preventing future deaths
