Notes:  It has been estimated that roughly 13% of Australian children live at home with at least one adult that misuses alcohol. This Resource Sheet discusses the guidelines on alcohol consumption, the effects of alcohol on parenting behaviour, and the relationship between alcohol abuse and child maltreatment. The sheet outlines safe drinking behaviours for adults and parents, the effects of excessive alcohol use on parenting and children, and includes a recommended drinks table for parents. The pamphlet then outlines associations between alcohol and child mistreatment and offers an estimation of the effected numbers in the Australian context. Other factors associated with alcohol misuse such as domestic violence, relationship breakdown, mental health issues and previous trauma and associated substance abuse, housing instability and poverty are also considered in the way in which they contribute or are intertwined with issues of alcohol misuse and child safety concerns.
