Notes:  Prevention of violence against women (VAW) is a major social policy goal identified within Australia's National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022:. Accordingly, significant funding is being allocated to prevention initiatives, including the launch in July 2013 of the new Foundation to Prevent Violence against Women and their Children.

Primary prevention strategies try to prevent violence before it takes place, by seeking to understand and target known risk factors for perpetration or victimisation. This is sometimes described as an 'upstream' approach to health promotion. This Fast Facts provides an overview of the public health model, upon which most prevention strategies rest, and its application in the VAW sector in Australia.
