Notes:  Domestic violence is widespread throughout the Australian population and is a gendered crime. However, estimates of the prevalence of domestic violence vary depending on the definition used. The two surveys most commonly quoted in Australian research are the Personal Safety Survey, Australia, 2005 conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2006), and the Australian component of the International Violence Against Women Survey (Mouzos & Makkai 2004). The Australian Institute of Criminology monitors the rate of homicide in Australia, including domestic homicide (Virueda & Payne 2010).
