This brief presents a summary of findings from a UK study that examined the effectiveness of sanctuary schemes. A sanctuary scheme is an approach designed to enable victims of domestic violence to choose to remain in their own accommodation through enhanced security measures and support where the perpetrator does not live in the accommodation. The findings address the origins of sanctuary schemes in the UK, sanctuary schemes as a housing option, risk assessment and installation of safety measures, providing support and effectiveness.
