This Factsheet 1 forms part of a series of 4 legal fact sheets that together give information on domestic violence restraining orders in the Northern Territory. Factsheet 1 introduces general information on what are restraining orders and how to get one. It also explains what a restraining order can do; defines what is a domestic relationship; who can apply; going to court; guns; and interstate orders. It describes the different types of restraining orders that can be made depending on the circumstances such as if the applicant wants the defendant to keep away; if s/he wants to continue the relationship with the defendant; if the defendant drinks or take drugs; or if the applicant has children.
