Five factsheets that together give information on domestic violence restraining orders in the Northern Territory. These fact sheets on restraining orders are: 1. What are they? How do I get one? 2. Now that you have a Restraining Order; 3. Domestic Violence, Children and Restraining Orders; 4. Information for Defendants; 5. Urgent and Police Restraining Orders. Factsheet 1 provides an introduction to what is a restraining order and what it can do; defines what is a domestic relationship; who can apply and how to apply for a restraining order; going to court; guns; and interstate orders. Factsheet 2 summarises what happens when you have a restraining order; duration of order; what to do if the defendant breaks the order; variation of order; and having an order if living together. Factsheet 3 briefly explains about children and restraining orders; and family court orders about residency and contact. Factsheet 4 introduces information for defendants; what happens when served with a restraining order; going to court; what happens if the matter goes to a hearing; breaching a restraining order; firearms; interstate order; and variation of order. Factsheet 5 addresses such issues as what is an urgent restraining order?; when can an urgent restraining order be made?; what will the urgent restraining order say?; how long do urgent restraining orders last for?; review of urgent restraining orders made by police; and other police powers. Key Northern Territory contact numbers for the crisis line, victims of crime, legal advice or advocacy services, and domestic violence counselling are also listed.
