Title: | The Western Australian State Government's action plan for addressing family violence and child abuse in Aboriginal communities : The response to the inquiry into response by Government agencies to complaints of family violence and child abuse in Aboriginal communities. |
Authors: | Western Australian State Government |
Year: | 2002 |
Publisher: | [Govt. of W.A.], [2002]. |
Notes: | This action plan sets out the Western Australian Government's response to the findings of the Inquiry into Response by Government Agencies to Complaints of Family Violence and Child Abuse in Aboriginal Communities (the Gordon Inquiry), which was prompted by the death of Susan Taylor at the Swan Valley Noongar Community in 1999. The Government's response represents a watershed in how it intends to deal with family violence and child abuse in Aboriginal communities. The action plan commits the Government to working in partnership with the Aboriginal community to implement a zero tolerance approach to child abuse. It outlines a commitment to increase police and child protection resources, targeting localities where it is jointly agreed this is urgently required. The plan also details initiatives that will enhance the capacity of statutory agencies to act when child abuse is detected or suspected; promises a further $66.5 million over four years to address gaps in Government agency service delivery to address key issues raised by the Gordon Inquiry; and commits to a process of public sector reform which will ensure that Government agencies can more effectively coordinate their efforts in dealing with incidents of child abuse, family violence and developing the capacity of communities generally. The second part of the action plan summarises responses to each of the Gordon Inquiry's recommendations by themes. |
