Notes:  Describes the methodology and sources of data used in constructing a profile of night patrol services in Australia and attempts to develop a working definition of night patrols as a specific service, before reviewing existing literature pertaining to the implementation and evaluation of night patrols in both Australia and overseas. An overview of the goals, target groups and activities of patrols that participated in the study is then provided and a detailed profile of patrols operating in Western Australia and the Northern Territory is presented. Patrols operating in other states are considered briefly and some of the key issues arising from the findings of the study, such as the need for a more secure funding base and tensions over leadership and cultural authority, are summarised. The paper concludes with a series of recommendations for reform.
