Authors: The National Committee on Violence Against Women
Keywords: Overview;Policy
Year: 1992
Publisher: Australian Govt. Pub. Service
Notes:  Utilising the framework of Heads of Government and Ministerial Councils, this paper sets out key objectives for eradicating violence against women and aims to provide direction for governments, on a State and Federal level, in achieving this goal. Section One details the major reasons for a national approach to violence against women and provides a background to the nature, extent and costs, both social and economic, of domestic violence in Australia. Section Two discusses the cultural context of violence against women and provides examples of ways in which Australia has attempted to respond to the problem. The aims and key objectives for action of the National Strategy are set out in Section Three and supported by a framework for implementing, monitoring and evaluating these objectives, as well as a compendium of directions for action, in Section Four. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the need for reform within the criminal justice and health systems and the importance of recognising and improving the status of women generally.
