Notes:  General Overview: This Canadian discussion paper provides a review of literature and research on the issue of psychological abuse in intimate partner and family relationships.

Discussion: The paper presents a table of the various tactics and behaviours used by domestic violence abusers and discusses the prevalence and occurrence of psychological abuse. The different relationships in which this abuse occurs are defined and discussed, and risk factors for each person in those relationships are outlined.

The authors outline the research and evidence regarding the short and long term effects (including trauma), and overall costs of psychological abuse. Legal remedies in the Canadian context are described and the paper concludes with a discussion of suggested actions for dealing with psychological abuse.
