Notes:	Outlines the background to the Domestic Violence Legislation Amendment Bill 2001 (Qld), which extends the Domestic Violence (Family Protection) Act 1989 (Qld). Provides an overview of domestic violence and examines some of the perceived problems with the original bill, including the definition of abuse being limited to spousal abuse and the ways that this may limit the options of people experiencing family violence, abuse by carers and dating abuse. The bill extends the protection of domestic violence orders to “domestic relationships” by changing the definition of domestic violence and providing a definition of an intimate and personal relationship; a family relationship and an informal care relationship. The paper discusses the provisions in the bill that extend the Domestic Violence (Family Protection) Act 1989 beyond abuse in the spousal relationship. It contains statistics on the operation of the Domestic Violence (Family Protection) Act between 1989 and 1997. Highlights the different circumstances and the need for more responsive services for particular groups including: Indigenous families; people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; people living in rural and remote communities; people with a disability; and lesbians and gay men.
