Year: 1994

Notes:  Although gender-based violence is a serious health problem, it is rarely viewed as a public health issue. This paper brings together existing data on the dimensions of violence against women worldwide and reviews literature on the health impact of violence against women. Examines relationship between violence and maternal mortality, health care utilisation, child survival, AIDS prevention and socioeconomic development. Explores interventions in primary prevention, justice system reform, health care response, programmes to assist victims and treatment programmes for perpetrators. Argues that any strategy to eliminate violence must address the root causes of the problem in addition to treating the symptoms.
