Notes: | Outlines the methodology and results of a quantitative study aimed at examining the nature and context of women’s experiences of abuse throughout their lifetime, their help-seeking behaviours and the extent to which health and general well-being is affected by such experiences. Data were obtained from women participating in the Women’s Health Australia longitudinal project. A brief review of recent literature and research into violence against women, and the range of perspectives from which it is studied, are provided. While the results indicate physical, emotional and sexual abuse are problems for women across the lifespan, and that a large proportion of women experience abuse on an ongoing basis, it is noted that the majority of cases occur in adult women and are perpetrated in the home. The study also found participants were more likely to experience emotional abuse than any other mode. Concludes further research into prevention, environmental and personal factors of victims is needed. |
