| Notes: | Presents the methodology and results of a Canadian study designed to examine alcohol abuse, by male partners, as a predictive factor in domestic violence, relative to other socio-demographic variables and proxy measures, such as attitudes towards male control and devaluation of female partners. A range of explanations advanced for the link between alcohol abuse and violence against women are explored and it is suggested that the relationship may be a spurious one, whereby masculinity is acted out through both heavy drinking and attacks/degradation of female spouses. Accordingly alcohol abuse is not a predictor of domestic violence in itself, but is a significant factor, particularly when coupled with certain attitudes and beliefs. Suggests that programmes focusing primarily on alcohol abuse are unlikely to be successful and argues that a better understanding of the values underlying men’s violent behaviour is needed. |
