Notes:  Overview: This Canadian paper presents the findings of a research project aimed at discovering and defining connections between elder abuse and other forms of family violence.

Discussion: In this qualitative study, the researchers aimed to build knowledge about elder abuse and to explore the perceptions of elder abuse held by groups of older adults and caregivers. The researchers interviewed seventy-seven adults and forty-three formal and informal caregivers in focus groups in Ontario and Alberta. Four major themes emerged from the findings:

The results indicate that victims are largely silent and that cultural factors, gender and ageism are important contributors to the abuse.
The paper begins with an overview and literature survey, before presenting the findings and then discussing the survey findings in depth, using examples from the interviews. Recommendations for policy and research are made.
