Notes:  Reports on the evaluation of the Safe Dates programme conducted with middle high school students in 14 schools in North Carolina, USA. The programme incorporated both school-based activities, including 10, 45-minute sessions delivered by physical health teachers, a theatre production performed by students, a poster competition, and community-based activities such as the provision of services for students in abusive relationships and service provider training. Reviewed follow-up data one year after the programme concluded to assess whether positive short-term effects (baseline data collected one month after completion of the programme) had been maintained. Control group students received exposure to community activities only. Results indicated no significant differences between control group and treatment groups in behavioural outcomes. However, the treatment group was less accepting of dating violence, perceived more negative consequences from engaging in dating violence, reported less destructive responses to anger and were more aware of victim and perpetrator services. It was found that while cognitive effects are maintained, behavioural effects fade. Amongst other explanations for this, researchers suggest that the programme may not have been of sufficient intensity and duration to produce long-lasting effects and they intend to test the effects of booster interventions in the future. It is also suggested that attitudes precede behavioural change and that perhaps behavioural changes will appear at later follow-up.
