Notes:  Provides a feminist critique of a series of quantitative ‘arrest experiments’ conducted in the US that attempted to correlate arrest rates with recidivism rates and contrast their findings with the ‘success’ of other possible police responses. Identifies three major problems with such an approach. Firstly, the isolation of one factor, (i.e. arrest), over-simplifies the issue and fails to incorporate an understanding of the complexity of domestic violence situations and criminal justice responses to it. Secondly, the participants in the project lacked a real voice, being reduced to statistics rather than recognised as individuals with unique perspectives. Lastly, the data collected was analysed and interpreted within an individualistic, as opposed to relational, framework. Argues that reliance on quantitative studies such as these can lead to misguided and ineffectual policy and legislation and suggests a range of alternative approaches.
